Candy or Lemons

HOOK

1. Ask for two / three volunteers. Blindfold each person. Ask group to not communicate what food the person blindfolded will eat. Give some candy, and others lemon.

2. Ask, “What would you have rather had in your mouth, the candy or the lemon?”

3. What would happen if all you ate was candy?

4. If all there was to eat was candy and lemons (no other options) and you could only choose one, which would be better for you to eat?

LOOK AT THE BOOK

1. Read scripture verse.

2. When do our choices seem like “candy”? (When they aren’t so good for us, when we don’t give them much thought for the future, choices that we make because we think they will give us immediate satisfaction)

3. What are some examples of candy choices? (Lying, trying things bad for our health, not going to church, taking revenge on people, bad attitude)

4. What kind of choices does God ask us to make that might seem unappealing, the kind that leave a bitter lemon taste in our mouths (not literally)? (Forgiving others, turning the other cheek, trusting in him rather than in ourselves)

TOOK

1. The scripture says that we live by the power of God when we let God’s choices guide our lives. Sometimes those choices are not easy. The temptation to make the “candy” choices is strong. Where do you find the strength to refuse the “candy choices” and instead, live by the power of God’s wisdom? (scripture, church family, and ask God for the strength)
